Why Man United Didn’t Sign Striker Before January Transfer Window Closed
Having previously been known for lavish spending in past transfer windows, Manchester United adopted a more cautious strategy during Ruben Amorim’s first opportunity to reshape the squad this winter. With only £30 million invested—alongside a modest compensation fee—the club secured Lecce’s Patrick Dorgu and Arsenal prospect Ayden Heaven, signaling a restrained approach despite expectations that they would reinforce their attacking lineup.
This season, Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee have struggled to make an impact, registering just five Premier League goals between them. For a club of United’s stature, such an underperforming frontline is almost unheard of, especially as projections indicate the team may be heading for one of their worst league finishes.
Speculation linked United with moves for Christopher Nkunku and highly regarded prospect Mathys Tel. However, neither transfer materialized, leaving Amorim without additional attacking reinforcements. The club's reluctance to make major signings appears to have been a deliberate choice.
According to GOAL, United are reportedly satisfied with their business, having focused on acquiring promising young talent while avoiding excessive spending. The club was unwilling to take financial risks or make impulsive decisions in the January window, a strategy designed to strengthen their position ahead of the summer transfer period.
Additionally, United had to operate within financial constraints imposed by Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) and prioritized long-term stability over short-term fixes. However, this did not prevent them from exploring potential attacking signings.
Before Mathys Tel finalized his loan move to Tottenham, United had shown interest in the 19-year-old. However, they backed away when Bayern Munich demanded a £5 million loan fee without an option to buy.
Ultimately, the January window saw more departures than arrivals for United’s attacking unit. Antony, who delivered a standout performance for his new club, and Marcus Rashford both left on loan to Real Betis and Aston Villa, respectively. Looking ahead, the summer window is expected to be more fruitful as United aim to equip Amorim with a squad that better aligns with his tactical vision.
