Premier League Post Statement After Liverpool Are Given Penalty vs Bournemouth

Liverpool asserted control in their Premier League clash against Andoni Iraola’s Bournemouth on Saturday after Mohamed Salah successfully converted a penalty. However, controversy erupted among fans, prompting the Premier League to issue a statement addressing claims that Lewis Cook had made no contact with Cody Gakpo.

Heading into the match at the Vitality Stadium, the Reds aimed to extend their unbeaten run to 19 games. They were handed a crucial opportunity just before the 30-minute mark when Gakpo went down inside the Bournemouth penalty area.

With the score still 0-0, Gakpo advanced towards goal when Cook was alleged to have made contact, resulting in the Dutchman falling. However, upon closer examination, it appeared that the Bournemouth midfielder had not touched him—Gakpo’s left leg instead clipped his right, causing him to stumble.

Despite this, referee Darren England promptly awarded Liverpool a penalty, a decision that was subsequently reviewed and upheld by VAR. The Premier League later confirmed that the challenge had been checked, with VAR ruling that Cook’s actions constituted a trip. Additionally, they verified that Gakpo was onside in the lead-up to the incident.

Addressing the controversy on X (formerly Twitter), the Premier League Match Centre stated:

"The referee’s call of a penalty was checked and confirmed by VAR – with the challenge deemed to have been a trip by Cook on Gakpo. The VAR also confirmed Gakpo was onside in the build-up."

Salah then stepped up to the spot and confidently converted, registering his 24th goal of the 2024/25 season across all competitions and giving Arne Slot’s side a vital lead within the opening half-hour.

The decision sparked outrage among fans, with many voicing their frustration on social media. One user wrote: "That’s not a penalty, ffs. Gakpo trips himself and goes down. If referees keep giving Liverpool decisions like this, they might as well hand them the title now."

Another fan, after reviewing the footage, commented: "It’s clearly not a penalty, but ‘LiVARpool’ can’t win the league without being gifted decisions by the Premier League and PGMOL." A third insisted that Gakpo, 25, had intentionally clipped his own heel to win the spot-kick.
